Job Title: Systems Administrator (Linux)
Competence level: Expert

Position Description:

The Expert-Level Systems Administrator with In-Depth Linux (RedHat) Experience is responsible for supporting the organization’s mission-critical Unix/Linux environments. This position requires installation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and support of Linux and Unix-based servers and network infrastructure. The role includes supporting data center infrastructure, including operating systems, network services, storage, virtualization, hardware, and backups. Additionally, the position requires designing and developing scripts and other automation and monitoring tools to ensure system availability, security, and performance.

This position requires strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate and work effectively within the IT team. Participate in the department on-call rotation, daily ticket reviews, and providing support to customers and IT related issues in a timely manner. The Expert-Level Systems Administrator will also be responsible for system installations and upgrades, proactive monitoring, and maintenance policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure and maintain data center, network, virtualization infrastructure, and critical IT services
  • Analyze and resolve problems with data center, network, virtualization hardware and infrastructure, application software, and operating systems
  • Install, configure and maintain Unix and Linux-based servers
  • Perform system backup and recovery
  • Participate in the department’s on-call rotation
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a professional manner and resolve issues
  • Automate processes to detect and solve problems quickly
  • Install new software, system upgrades, evaluate and install patches
  • Provide project planning and management of new technology deployments, customer projects, system upgrades, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff to improve processes, solve problems, and resolve conflicts
  • Keep abreast of new products and technologies applicable to our business needs
  • Offer process improvement suggestions and assist with designing and implementing solutions as needed
  • Provide PC and Windows OS support as needed
  • Ensure system availability, security, and performance
  • Train and mentor junior staff when needed

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Solid understanding of information security concepts and practices
  • 7+ years of systems administration experience
  • 7+ years of Unix and Linux operating system administration experience
  • Experience with network maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Solid understanding of operating systems; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions), can use performance analysis to tune systems.
  • Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, the design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts.
  • Ability to program in an administrative language (Python, Perl, shell, etc.)
  • RHCE certification is preferred
  • Experience with configuration management
  • US Citizen or Green Card Holder due to federal contract requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or Information Technology preferred
  • Professional experience in lieu of education accepted

Physical demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods at a desk, conference table, or in meeting rooms
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while operating computers, printers, and other networking equipment
  • Facility to occasionally move about inside the office to access computers, printers, office machinery, etc.
  • Able to position self to maintain computers in the data center or networking rooms and closets, including under the desk
  • Ability to pull floor tiles and reach under raised floor tiles to perform cabling activities
  • Periodically lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 50 pounds
