Environmental Excellence Thrives in Mid-Atlantic Excellent Places to Work

March 31, 2009 - Extending its recognition of Mid-Atlantic companies, the Alliance for Workplace Excellence (AWE) presents its prestigious EcoLeadership Award to nineteen businesses that have demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability -- because being green creates great workplaces.

Recognizing visionary employers who are paving the way for environmentally sustainable workplaces, award winners must demonstrate commitment to environmental sustainability in energy efficiency, waste minimization, pollution prevention, water conservation and environmentally conscious travel. Applicants undergo a rigorous assessment process led by an independent review panel.

"Winning this award reflects our commitment to operating responsibly," said Kathy Monday, Vice President of Customer Product Support and Business Services at AstraZeneca, a 2009 EcoLeadership Award winner. "At AstraZeneca, we help people live healthier lives by discovering and developing meaningful medicines. For us, sustainability and EcoLeadership allow us to help make the environment healthier so people feel better inside and out."

AWE will recognize sixty-six regional awardees at its Annual Awards Luncheon on June 3, 2009, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. More than 600 leading business executives are expected to attend.

The theme for this year's luncheon is "Healthy, Wealthy, and Green". The keynote speaker will be Chris Smith, Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes environmentally-friendly construction. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Mr. Smith joined the U.S.G.B.C. in 2005 and will offer his unique understanding of "green" business practices and their profitability.

The awards event is open for press coverage. Those wishing to attend should contact Liz Sobrino at (301) 229-7555 by June 1, 2009.

About AWE:

The Alliance for Workplace Excellence provides a portfolio of services that allow employers to build excellent places to work. It created the Workplace Excellence and Health & Wellness Trailblazer Awards to highlight businesses that promote professional fulfillment and personal wellness at work, at home, and in the community.

Recognizing the connection of green issues to workplace excellence, AWE established its EcoLeadership Award for 2009. The AWE EcoLeadership Award recognizes visionary employers who are paving the way by creating environmentally sustainable workplaces. Applicants undergo a rigorous assessment process led by an independent review panel of PhD professionals, doctoral candidates in business, industrial and organizational psychology, and human resources, communication experts, construction professionals, naturalists, and business executives.

The Alliance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by Montgomery County, Maryland, and Discovery Communications. For more information, visit http://www.excellentworkplace.org.
